Album Review

The Belorussian DIFFUZION manage to refine their sound with each release they make and add some extra layers as well. ‘Winter Cities’ is their third album that lingers between EBM, Industrial Dark Electro and Darkwave. And as far it concerns the “intelligent” Industrial they do just fine. Yet they refuse to put their hands in the mud to produce something more edgy. It is something that AUTODAFEH and ACYLUM are no slackers with and their versions of ‘C.S.’ are by far more “dirty” and danceable than the original song. The songs that stand out here are surely ‘Winter Cities’ - a mid-tempo Darkwave metaphor about the winter and alienation- which, I think, if it were sung (at least partially) in Russian then the message would come out stronger as it would point out to places like Kolyma. The other notable song and probably the most danceable one is the dark electro ‘For The Prey’, a song that carries the heritage of the FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY which as it seems was the band that deeply influenced DIFFUZION on a whole. In short, this CD is an important addition to the DIFFUZION catalogue, throughout enjoyable though not exactly a dance-floor filler. Yet the band establishes itself among the notable ones and that’s quite something per se.
