Album Review

The German 18 SUMMERS are the project of the ex-singer of SILKE BISCHOFF, Felix Flaucher, and Frank Schwer. And after 22 years on the music scene (either as SB or 18 SUMMERS), Flaucher is releasing his latest CD, ‘The Magic Circus’, in which he proclaims that what you’ll encounter is not just Synth-Pop or even Darkwave but a cross-genre. What you’ve really got is a cross-genre for sure. With elements of Low Bap (a slower tempo Rap), Rock, 80’s Synth Pop, and layers of Darkwave that are combined most satisfactorily in ‘Chippewa Lake Park’ and ‘The Strange Fruit’. There’s also the ‘Radio S.A.T.A.N’ that is moving towards the Melodic Rock and it is one of the best songs of this album. And to be sure, every track has its own interest but overall the feeling you get is of circle-jerking. Now, if every album is something more than the sum of songs included in it, then the band needs to seriously contemplate on its direction. There’s an old saying that is applicable here; “If you don't know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere.”
