Album Review
The debut release from ALL HAIL THE YETI brings forth a spin on Metal that should make those seeking something more than just a typical “harsh verse/ clean chorus” style quite happy. Blending Hardcore with Alternative Metal, fans from MASTODON to DOWN should definitely appreciate the sludgy, slightly fuzzed out rumble of tracks like ‘Deep Creek’ and ‘The Art Of Mourning’. Tracks like these definitely have a Southern touch to them while remaining heavy and aggressive; one can even pick up traces of Metalcore in the snarled vocals. While the music never really picks up to breakneck speeds the music carries its weight in distortion similar to how Doom Metal can be and hits just as hard. Other tracks like ‘When The Sky Falls’ are a bit more mainstream with the inclusion of clean vocals which is certainly catchy enough and a more “spoken word” format on verses to make ALL HAIL THE YETI seem a little less orthodox in their music. The clean vocals definitely sound a bit like mid era MASTODON without losing a heavy or touching on something too progressive. Of course, the album has its progressive moments too such as the split ‘Prelude To Flames’ and ‘After The Great Fire’ which makes use of spoken word samples and mostly just guitar work before adding in the clean vocals and layering them to carry the melodies out.
The use of samples continue to be present on other tracks as well such as the opening of ‘The Art Of Mourning’ and ‘Ruby Ridge’. They don’t make or break the track, but just add a different flavour to start things out rather than just let the chugging guitars open up every time and just crunch along to the point of monotony. Listeners will certainly notice a sudden inclusion of more clean vocals during the chorus on the second half of the album, but by this point they will probably have come to be appreciated by most, whereas the first few tracks were just test runs to get eased into. Some tracks just feature no clean vocals and carry on in slow Sludgecore fashion such as ‘Axe Murder Hollow’. As dark and crushing as the music is, listeners might actually begin to miss the clean singing at this point. The closing ‘Judas Cradle’ brings them back, but in spoken word format similar to ‘When The Sky Falls’ to keep the album rounded out. Despite being twenty minutes, the track lets up after six and just fills the rest with ambient nature noise. Some may find this relaxing while others a waste of space and time. Still, after all the aggression of this beast of an album maybe it is a good thing to leave about fourteen minutes to mellow out. While not a perfect album, fans of slower Metal that isn’t melodramatic will find ALL HAIL THE YETI quite an enjoyable listen.
