Album Review

The French metal formation ABINAYA combines in their style heaviness and energy of pure high quality metal with some ethnic elements, and all that supplemented with the powerful vocals and lyrics in French also concerning more or less ethnic subjects with a dark atmosphere typical for the genre. Even for the name of the band the musicians have chosen a Sanskrit word meaning “passing on”. So after the first listening to ABINAYA’s latest creation ‘Beauté Païenne’ (Pagan Beauty) I could only say that such peculiar mixture sounds interesting but unusual and one may need time to get used to it, especially to the singing in French, yet the instrumental parts will be appreciated immediately. The title track which opens the whole thing overwhelms a listener at once with its intensive drumming and resilient guitars which don’t seem to lose their positions even for a second. And when I decided that the composition would be instrumental the voice appeared and that harsh manner of singing perfectly goes with the music.

The next song, ‘Arawaks’, shares the same tendency to convey the wild beauty of virgin nature, emotions of people living there. Also it’s just a strong dynamic track in the best traditions of the style. The same can be said about ‘Haine’ (Hate) while ‘L’Epitaphe’ seems to be more saturated, deeper and slightly darker than its predecessors. The death of love is fully expressed with the melody so we don’t even need to understand the lyrics to get the idea what this song is about. ‘Le Noir Soleil’ (Black Sun) turns out to be a peaceful, melancholic composition that pleases listeners with its tunefulness and tranquillity. Closer to the end of the album ethnic elements become more distinct and the expressiveness of two final pieces intensifies. So ‘Le Nouvel Insurgé’ (New Rebel) devoted to French writer and insurgent Jules Vallès is a good finale for this original but sometimes too intricate album. To sum it all up I can only add that the record is definitely interesting and worth listening to at least to get to know such music.
