It was in 2012 that BLACK STAR RIDERS [BSR] was formed by four members of THIN LIZZY – Scott Gorham, lead vocalist/ guitarist, Ricky Warwick, co-lead guitarist, Damon Johnson and bassist Marco Mendoza – plus former MEGADETH and ALICE COOPER drummer Jimmy DeGrasso. The band’s debut album ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’ was released in 2013, and drew widespread critical acclaim in most relevant print media. So much for the information provided by the internet and Nuclear Blast itself, do BSR sound like THIN LIZZY? Yes of course they do! Is it a bad thin creatively? Hell NO!!!
It is also true that the BSR seem to evolve and step by step find their own style, so no not every song sounds like LIZZY but often enough to satisfy both fans of this incarnation of THIN LIZZY and fans of the new material written and performed by the now named BLACK STAR RIDERS. ‘Finest Hour’ is a feel-good time song and my personal highlight. ‘Sex, Guns & Gasoline’ is pretty macho but very likeable too. Not to mention that the opener ‘Killer Instinct’ is pretty well chosen as the first song on this very satisfying output.
To mention that these guys play ultra-tight together is an understatement but I gotta state the fact that I really love Rick Warwick’s voice, he really sounds like Phil Lynott very often but he stands for himself too, great vocalist. ...that’s it, go and buy the record already!!!
