Album Review

Being BUCKCHERRY’s seventh studio album, ‘Rock’n’Roll’ raises high expectations. It’s the first full length album under the label ’F-Bomb Records’, following last year’s ‘Fuck’ EP, and the title ‘Rock’n’Roll’ says it all. Their recent releases followed concepts: ‘Confession’ thematically based itself on the seven sins, ‘Fuck’... well, you can guess. And ‘Rock’n’Roll’ sure joins that row, as explained by lead singer Josh Todd: "There's been so much talk about how Rock 'n' Roll is dead and all of this bullshit. The funny thing is, that's been going on since we put out our first record in 1999. We wanted to call the new album Rock 'n' Roll, because this is what we've been doing our whole lives. We focused on making a record that encompasses all of what we are. You get every flavour of BUCKCHERRY."

That being said, the album’s opener ‘Bring It On Back‘ already starts with good old fashioned rock tunes that get you into the mood, and the band do exactly what the title says: bringing it on! ’Tight Pants’ and ’Sex Appeal’ already give more than a hint with their title: they’re an excellent example for the band’s seductive lyrics we already know very well from songs like ‘Crazy Bitch’ (album ’15’, released in 2005). ‘Wish To Carry On‘‘s catchy melody reminds a bit of the rock of the 90s and even though it’s more melodic it has a certain bite to it. The follow-up, ’The Feeling Never Dies’ comes along as quieter and pretty much classic hard rock ballad.

Acoustic sounding guitars emphasize the heartbreak-feeling that the whole song carries, in the lyrics as well as in the melody. In the end it even becomes a duet, making it very intense and giving just the right feeling. The next track, ‘Cradle’, has a lot more drive again, bristling tunes from the start to the end, while ‘The Madness‘ is a typical BUCKCHERRY song - hands in the air, get ready to jump. ‘Wood‘ - another great example for the band’s explicit lyrics wrapped in sleazy tunes - hasn’t as much energy as ‘The Madness‘ but it’s pretty catchy anyway, as well as ‘Rain’s Falling‘ although this one is a very special one. With almost Country-like tunes it’s very laid back, chilly and a nice change of pace.

‘Sex Appeal’, as already mentioned, is lyric-wise a bit more explicit. The tune though is definitely made to play live; you can already imagine the interaction between band and audience. Also it is picking up the fast pace again - sweet! And this pace continues in the last song, ‘Get with It’, as well, which makes the album a round thing without a doubt. ‘Rock’n’Roll‘ is an overall nice piece of work, combining everything BUCKCHERRY are strong in. The mixture between ’in your face’ and sleazy is just right and even though I am not a big fan of the band I can’t say that I did not enjoy listening to it. Well done!
