Album Review

In the hearts and minds of 80s music fans she’ll always have a fixed place with hits such as ‘Time after Time’ and ‘Girls just wanna have fun’, the woman with the flamboyant dresses because of which people sneered at her at first; in the end she became one of the most influencing factors in 80s fashion. CYNDI LAUPER, who once started from scratch, now is world-famous and with ‘Bring ya to the Brink’ she’ll release the first album since 1997 only comprising new songs.

And now we start with ‘High & Mighty’, a surprising song without any doubt as it presents itself in a costume that couldn’t be more minimal. There’s only the casual use of sampled and processed guitar chords atop a straight dance beat so the listeners have to focus on Cyndi’s vocals, admittedly not the worsted thing. With a humming bass effect and a soon emerging dance beat ‘Into the Nightlife’ seems to continue where the opener left off. But things never turn out the way you expect and so new elements appear like a beat pattern resembling splintering glass and the playful bass effect has something to it. In the middle, specifically when the chorus tarts the song blossoms out with a genuine pop appeal framed by a disco melody. For the next song she’s obviously drawn some inspiration from our hood-blooded friends from the southern, warmer lands and a t times ‘Rocking Chair’ reminds of one of those Mexican party songs. A virtuosi played guitar joins forces with an undeniably rhythmic eat and the only thing you can do is shake your hips. Another track, another style so it seems when a house track welcomes me on ‘Echo’ and frankly speaking, I was irritated but the track also has another face, it shows I its incredible catchy chorus encompassed by sugar sweet pop melodies. When you think you couldn’t be surprised anymore, the title track ‘Bring ya to the Brink’ comes along where the feeling of a soul songs driven by a pipe organ and corresponding vocals goes into a clinch with an almost hip-hop like beat and the staccato vocals of the chorus. ‘Same ol’ Story’ picks up some of the elements from before and makes a lovely pop song out of it with just the right doze of melodies and a CYNDI LAUPER in top form regarding her voice.

Following this are two songs showing a brittle melancholic side of CYNDI LAUPER despite their obvious dance direction. ‘Raging Storm and ‘Lay me Down’. The former especially impresses me with its hovering atmospherics, the strings giving it a weightless feeling and not least the powerful chant. ‘Lay me down’ on the other hand, doesn’t pick up the ancestor’s pace and goes about it a bit calmer with a well constructed rhythm bound by a nice repetitive melody whilst Cindy intonates the lyrics in a lightly throaty and at the same time mellow way. For all the ones that have waited for the next straight forward track get ready for ‘Give it up’ using less melody for drawing all the attention to the superior vocals. On ‘Set your Heart’ gets a lot of drive through the trumpets flying over the composition, supported by the luring sounds of synthesized strings. What impressed me the most about ‘Grab a Hold’ was the vocal spectrum she displays here, from almost childlike to immense heights. If you’ve ever needed a proof of her vocal capabilities here it is. But the real highlight comes with the last song ’Rain on me’. And one little advice ‘Get out your tissues as some might get moved to tears by that wonderful ballad with absolute goose bump factor.

Frankly, I have to say that I was a bit biased before starting to listen to the album, as a big bunch of the songs from CYNDI LAUPER really weren’t my cup of tea yet the freshness and   the verve on ‘Bring ya to the Brink’ not to mention the really impressing vocals make it a joy to listen to the album. Maybe I’m still not a big fan of her other works but this album is highly recommended.
