Album Review

AUTOCLAV1.1 is the musical outlet of UK-based Tony Young doing promotional work for the electronic music scene before starting his project in late 2004. Through the following years he released a couple of EPs and albums with which he built up a considerable reputation in the scene. After releasing the remix album ‘Broken Beats for Broken Hearts’ in January he switched to rising label Tympanik Audio for his third album ‘Love no longer lives here’.

‘Casually Loosing Selected Memories’ opens the album with a beautiful piano sequence, seemingly fading away into eternity until an understated rhythm appears which is pushing the song forward, being complemented with rich strings as it progresses further. After a short shamanic vocal sample it’s the strings taking over the control on ‘All for You’ soaring over the richly layered live drum patterns that, together with the omnipresent piano’ exhale a constant flow of emotional depth. On ‘The Essential Condition’ the rhythm’s getting a little more complicated, building up on broken percussion sounds and initially it seems the gloomy atmosphere would bear you down with all the dark strings, but the song is what I like to call an ‘evolver’ and its mood is changing it doesn’t appear that dark anymore and the vast atmospheres are just brilliantly crafted. ‘All long black Spirals’ takes a different turn at the junction and presents a much harder theme. The rhythms are crunchier and razor-sharp, sharp as the harsh riffs coming in now introducing another new facet in the sound that especially in the later course of the song, causes heavy goose bumps when the riffs join the airy chorals. ‘We shatter sometimes’ introduces’ heavier beats much more industrial-like than before and a chopped riff, but soon the piano takes a lot of the harshness away from the arrangement. I really fell in love with the passage halfway through the song, when these organic drums come back to merge with the piano and bass. Brilliant!!

In contrast ‘Tiny Matters’ almost appears a little unspectacular at first with it’s calmness, it’s introverted sound, but you should take your time to dive into the song as this tiny piece of music unfolds an incredible atmosphere, once you’re engaging yourself in it’s world. If you like it a bit more complicated than I guess I’ve got the right one for you with ‘It’s Indifference’ whose full-grown beat patterns with all their tweaks and hidden details strongly remind me of the ‘Visitor Attractions’ sound, on a much higher level. Atmospherics as deep as the sea counterpoint the harsher rhythms and so create a perfect balance between the brutal and the beautiful. From the very first tone of ‘Hell is the Face of Love’ it’s somehow clear that it’s moving relentlessly towards a climax, emerging with the appearance of intensely layered ambience on the aural arena, blending with the elaborate beat work to pluck your heartstrings, while ‘The Stranger Hope’ leads us back on ‘complicated-rhythm’ territory and it must have been an awful lot of work to hook up those patterns, especially those in the middle of the song with all the percussion elements and sound effects. Now we’re wandering on ‘Trails without Pathways’ leading us through bleak winter landscapes where melancholic sometimes sad strings and chorals imbue woods of bare trees and where a gradually changing rhythm sounds from somewhere. The initial melodies of ‘Six Minutes to live’ affect something deep inside of me, they make me incredibly sad, but in the later course they also radiate a bit of hope just as if it’s a release of a painful life that’s to come soon…

Tony Young has made a big leap forward with ‘Love no longer lives here’ in terms and production and emotional depth as well. By drawing inspiration from different genre’s able to dad whole new facets to his sound and delivers his finest work to date with ‘Love no longer lives here’
