Introduction

The Dreamside was Founded in 1994 by Kemi Vita and released their debut album ‘Pale Blue Lights’ at Deathwish Office / Nuclear Blast Records. ‘Pale Blue Lights‘ was loved by the music press and on several concerts the band proofed their skills as live musicians. After the release of this album guitar player Fried Bruggink joined the band. Due to the success of ‘Pale Blue lights’ and the impressive live performances of the band The Dreamside was requested to make a dance album which was released in 1995 under the appropriate name of ‘Nuda Veritas’. This album contains three songs which served their purpose on the dance floors. In many ways the third album ‘Apaika’ was a important point in the history of The Dreamside. Released in 1996 under Nuclear Blast / East West ‘Apaika’ revealed the potency and diversity of the band. The reviews in the music magazines were great. It was time for a tour and so The Dreamside went on their first big European tour on which Kemi and her musicians also played on the Wave Gottic Treffen in Leipzig. In 1997 guitarist Cees Viset came to the band and they played several festivals and shows in Holland, Germany and Poland. One year later bassist and producer Roman Schoensee joined the band. ‘Mirror Moon’ was released in May 2001 and The Dreamside played on several festivals in Germany and Holland. The music became harder then on the previous albums. Drummer Sebastian Brauchle joined the band in the summer of 2001 and The Dreamside recorded a song for the ‘the tribute to Type O’Negative’ compilation album, which was released in December 2001. A Dreamside compilation called ‘Faery Child’ was released in the fall on Dancing Ferret Records with a selection of tracks spanning their 7 year history plus two previously unreleased tracks, and a remix from The Cruxshadows. They have now been joined by drummer Merijn Mol. Recently they have recorded a new single together with Rogue from the Cruxshadows ‘Open Your Eyes’ of which the video can be found at their new album ‘Spin Moon Magic’ which is to be released on the 5th of September this year.

Song review

1. The Dreamside featuring Rogue ‘Open Your Eyes’, single version 3:40
Starting out with dreamy keyboard tunes the song is then is enriched by beats which make it impossible to stand still. With the beats come the warm voice of Rogue and the sweet voice of Kemi. Their voices are a great combination. They each sing their own lines but also sing together and at times they both sing other lyrics but at the same time, giving dept to the song. These lyrics are very poetic, the story is not directly told but described.

2. Spin Moon Magic 3:38
Besides four versions of ‘Open Your Eyes’ it is nice to also get an insight on how The Dreamside can sound as well. ‘Spin Moon Magic’ is a heavier song, this time Kemi’s vocals are accompanied by the grunts of Roman. Kemi shows here her voice also has a dark side, besides the high notes she can sing quite low as well. Although this song has very danceable beats you could also bang your head to it. If you’d only hear this song they might even be a great option for the next Metal Female Voices.

3. Open Your Eyes, Blutengel remix 4:47
Sounds of a UFO ascending but then familiar beats sound. This version is much more electronic, extra beats are added and vocals have a less prominent part in the song, sometimes they just sound like a distant choir. You could totally disappear into this song on the dance floor. At times it sounds like the original version but just then it turns round and electronic beats take over.

4. Open Your Eyes, Lunascape remix 5:02
In this mix the vocal lines are made to sound dreamier, distant but touching. Sometimes just single lines are repeated, emphasising some of the beautiful lyrics. But occasionally the refrain is to be heard. It is a more quiet version of the song which has some wonderful elements but it has lost the power of the original.

5. The Dreamside featuring Rogue ‘Open Your Eyes’, album version 3:55

Conclusion

Besides a great song, there are 2 remixes which both emphasises other qualities of this song. Then there is an extra song, which gives a little bit of an insight on the new album which is now released. The extras are quite excessive for just a single so you will not be disappointed at all when you purchase this single. Overall this single gives you a peak in to the world which is called The Dreamside. Enjoy it, I have.
