Album Review

Founded in 1989 by Thomas Elbern after leaving PINK TURNS BLUE, ESCAPE WITH ROMEO now has entered the year of their 20h anniversary and for that very special occasion they’ll be releasing on 13th March 2009 a retrospective aptly titled ‘History’.

Shame on me for not dealing closer with this band as yet, though the name crossed my path so many times up until now but better late than never! And I must tell you I’m all enthusiastic for this music now that I’ve tasted a glimpse contained in this collection. But let’s now get to the real important part which is the music. ‘History’ opens with ‘Here comes the Night’ drowning my soul in this pool of fluid synth and guitar work bound to unflashy but experienced drum work and continues the journey with ‘Anteroom for your Love’ taking off with a lightly warped guitar melody before drums, synths, and Thomas Elbern’s voice blend together and make up one big melancholic unity. The next 5 minutes and 32 seconds belong to ‘Somebody’, the second single ever released by ESCAPE WITH ROMEO that advanced to an Indie club hit back in the days and though you can hear that it’s not been produced yesterday it’s still on par with many modern productions if you ask me.

Did you ever wish to have wings? To disconnect your being from the rushing world and watch everything from above, go to every place you want? ‘Wings’ picks up that though and channels it into one dark-coloured anthem to get lost into. ‘It’s Loneliness’ sets out for more rocking shores. Guitars are really much more present but there’s also enough kittenish synth work interlaced within. ‘Refuge’ cuts things down to an acoustic showcase of the most brittle kind with only distant accentuation by sustained synth mourning. The nostalgic crackling of an old record and ravelled piano herald the start of the last song on ‘History’ being ‘Godz look down on us’, also here it is the expressive voice of Thomas Elbern put through plenty of distortion effects on this one, that make sit an absolutely timeless gem.

For Newbies like me ‘History’ is more than just a good introduction into the work of ESCAPE WITH ROMEO as all hits out of the entire band history and with the revamped version of ‘Wings’ the acoustic version of Refuge’ and the new track called ‘Stranded’ there’s also something on for older fans I guess.
