Album Review

Death metal from Germany turned to be something new for me so it’s time to fill in the gap. Actually fans of metal know that two major death metal clans are presented on American and Swedish scenes and American rapid style differs greatly from Swedish melodic one where brutal sound perfectly combines with beautiful melody. So it should be said that the death metal of German quintet AKREA has strongly pronounced northern background: it’s tuneful but rigid and deep growling performed so qualitatively that it almost easy to understand lyrics. All the aforementioned features can be found on the band’s latest effort entitled ‘Lügenkabinett’. The musicians don’t often resort to outrageous speeds and listeners always have an opportunity to concentrate on the melodies. However some tracks for example ‘Guten Tag’, ‘…so schön’ and ‘Auf leisen Sohlen’ contain elements of blast beat or just very rich drumming typical for the genre.

The structure of the album is quite unusual: the storm of strict riffs and interesting guitar passages isn’t anticipated by any intro. In the middle there appears short instrumental interlude ‘Ach was bist Du schön...’ that is a bit slower than the other compositions and is meant to prepare a listener to the next vigorous song. To top it off we enjoy complicated instrumental ‘Zwischen den Welten’ the beauty of which can be compared to the one of ‘Orion’ be METALLICA but this time more melodic and with a more diverse arrangement. All in all these German metallers blend in their music the peculiarities of northern death metal and German dark scene. Obviously the release will be appreciated by fans of both styles, those who like DARK TRANQUILITY or late works of CREMATORY though the album will suit the taste of all lovers of good heavy music in general and the most extreme directions of it.
