Album Review

EGOamp is Asmodi Caligari and Cesare Insomnia, it’s a new project influenced by 80s electronic music and the love for silent movies like "The cabinet of dr. Caligari" and others. The first song Asmodi and Cesare recorded was a cover of the classic ‘The Cabinet’, originally released by the English band DAS KABINETT. The first tracks came to the attention of Chris Lietz, i.e. producer of German electronic pioneers DIE KRUPPS, who decided right away to produce EGOamp's first album ‘Welcome To The Cabinet’.

‘Welcome To The Cabinet’ is a very interesting and well made album. I enjoy the cinematic feeling and atmosphere that the songs creates. I think it’s cool that the central theme is the silent movie classic "Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari" by Robert Wiene, 1920. While listening to the songs I like the lyrics and vocals but what really capture my interest are the moving melodies and the good synth-pop sounds that really are a pleasure in my ears. In the first song, ‘Holstenwall’, your ears get a taste of carnival sounds in the intro that begins with what I believe is a barrel organ, you also hear a bell ringing before it drifts away and is replaced by the sound of a beating heart. Then a powerful beat slowly rise, takes hold and transform it all. The distant sound of a beating heart ends this song quietly and subtly, it’s hard to believe that the song is over 6 min long because it really stays fresh.

‘We Are Freaks’ is a different and interesting song, it starts with a cool guitar sound that I enjoy hearing becoming more present / loud as the song opens up. I really enjoy listening to all the electro sounds in this song and the moving melody in the chorus have me hocked and makes me want to listen to it some more. When I listened to ‘The Camera’ for the first time and heard the intro with the merry sounding piano I was wondering what would become of this. I did not expect that the piano intro would be followed by a loudly spoken ‘Action’ and then that the song would change course and becomes something totally different. For me this intense and slow song creates such a special feeling and atmosphere. I really like the lyrics, the way they are sung/spoken and the moving music. I did not see myself falling for this song but in the end this one is the song that have me coming back, hitting repeat one more time.
