Album Review

ETERNAL NIGHTMARE is a German band, established in 2004 under a name NERO, THE SILENT. After a death of his band mate, Nils Sinatsch renamed the project into ETERNAL NIGHTMARE. After several demos and EPs band released their debut ‘Between The Worlds’ in 2007. Now Nils Sinatsch presents his most personal album with ‘Days Without Sleeping’, that reflects hard time in his life, as well as his desire to extend the boundaries of his sound. ‘Days Without Sleeping’ is released in 3 versions: free download version, which contains 10 tracks, payable HQ-download version, which contains 12 tracks and CD-digipack version, which contains 16 Tracks.

The galloping rhythm of the opener ‘The Worst Day In History’ carries you along to introduce the new sound of the band with walls of dirty guitars, straight rhythms, electronic noise inclusions and emotional vocals. ‘I Made Myself’ adds more old-school sounding electronics with piercing sequences and grumbling bass and changes topic of the lyrics from criticizing of society to private one, which goes on in ‘I Don't Care’ that sounds a bit hysterical in its denial, emphasized with aggressive vocals and pushing riffs. ‘Disillusioned’ reduces the feverish tempo of the previous track, based on the melancholic piano melody and electronic noises in the beginning, it acquires buzzing guitar backing in the chorus, which together with strained voice getting slightly distorted persuasively conveys the feeling of disillusion described in the lyrics.

‘Mothearth’ presents a remarkable pure electronic track with certain old-school attitude and a good contrast between row vocals in the verses and insinuating voice in the refrain, whispering: “Mother, who is your killer?”. The interesting fact about this song - it was previously released as charity-single for the victims of Japanese catastrophes. Originally composed by Cabaret Voltaire, ‘Yashar’ is an excellent example of a great cover, because Nils Sinatsch managed to preserve the characteristic features of Cabaret Voltaire and the unique atmosphere of the eighties and simultaneously to refresh the track with his own distinctive sound. The other cover on the album, a version of Nine Inch Nails' classic ‘Just Like You Imagined’ differs from the original only by fuzzier sound with peculiar buzzing guitar cascades. In this context the song ‘Distance’ should be mentioned, as it bears strong resemblance to Nine Inch Nails by its arrangements and manner of singing.

The next ‘Individual’ dilutes the gloomy atmosphere of the previous track with its energetic sequences that couple with overdriven guitars to perform nice instrumental part in the end of the song. ‘I Like Porn’ is a relaxing track with electronic sounds soaring over the looped guitar riff sustained on deep vibrating bass line. Hard riffs and screaming in the chorus makes ‘Borderline’ the hardest song on the album, that also reminds of alternative rock. ‘Days Without Sleeping’ comes to an end with doleful ballad ‘Pictures’, in which gentle piano sharply contrasts with sludgy distorted background, embellished with the acoustic guitar emerging here and there. ‘Days Without Sleeping’ is a solid album, which will certainly find its listeners. But despite the long working process it seems to be a bit row and also lacks some freshness.
