The Dreamside

The Dreamside is a special band which deserves a lot more attention than it does right now. A lot of people don't seem to know them, but I'm sure that when hearing and seeing this band perform, many people will get hooked. The Dreamside was one of the three bands who were about to play in a difficult to find venue in the town Hoorn. They were the main act this evening and I was really looking forward to it. I had seen them several times before already, but this time their show was extended with the performance of a fire-artist. There were two bands that played before The Dreamside. At first there was the gothic metal band Mantikhoras with a female singer who was unable to reach high notes. The second band was the "blue" metal band Seraphique. Seraphique was struggling with technical problems for over half an hour, which made the impatience of the audience grow.

The Dreamside

The Dreamside was founded in 1994 by the Dutch/Italian singer Kemi Vita. In that year the band released the debut cd "Pale Blue Lights". After that they released the EP "Nuda Veritas" (1995), "Apaika" (1996), "Mirror Moon" (2001), the compilation cd "Faery Child" (2002), the EP "Open Your Eyes" and "Spin Moon Magic" (2005). The band is mainly well known in Germany and in the USA.  At the moment the band is busy working on a new acoustic CD, a DVD and a re-release of the album “Pale Blue Lights“. The current bandmembers are: Kemi Vita (vocals), Fried Bruggink (guitar), Cees Viset (guitar), Roman Schoensee (bass) and Merijn Mol (drums).

Music
Due to technical problems with the previous band The Dreamside started about an hour too late. It was at a time many people had to leave to catch the last train or bus of that evening, which was a real shame. The hall was almost completely empty before the band started, but fortunetaly the dancefloor got more and more filled after the band hit the first notes. The band played a varied set, starting with the song "This Quest" from the album Apaika. There was nothing negative to say about their show. Kemi's voice was crystal clear and filled with emotion. She sounded very strong in combination with the powerful sound of the instruments. Subcutaneous tension could be felt during "Somewhere Before". Merijn had taken place behind his kettledrum which he beat slowly with burning torches. But later during the show something did go wrong actually. Before the song "Into A Frenzy" started Fried had to leave the stage for a while because a snare of his guitar had broken. After a few minute break he came back to rock the stage again. Although The Dreamside had started way much later than planned there was still time for an encore: "Nuda Veritas" and in their enthusiasm they were even allowed to play one more song, "The Feast Is Set".

Performance
Tonight the band paid more attention to its visual aspects than normal, because they were allowed to in this venue. The bandmembers always show themselves as musicians who play with full conviction, and that shows of their faces and their attitude. Also this evening they were able to convince in spite of the lack of audience. Now their show was reinforced by Medusa, a fire-artist who had also co-operated in their videoclip "Open Your Eyes". During "Somewhere Before" the lights shut down and Fried and Roman held a burning torch in their hands. Merijn played the kettledrum with burning sticks. Medusa entered the stage with gloves with burning ends and walked graciously and sensually around Kemi and the other bandmembers. She continued her performance during "Open Your Eyes", which was also reinforced by their videoclip, which was played on a large videoscreen. Not that anyone looked at the video, because all eyes were aimed at Medusa. This all really warmed up the audience in this cold, too empty venue. The band had another surprise ahead. During the song "Forsaken" a glittercannon was fired and the snippets rained down on all people standing there. So The Dreamside delivered an impressive and professional show tonight, and again I am convinced they deserve more fame than they have now.
