11th November 2017
Archive & One Sentence. Supervisor

‘The False Foundation’ is coming back to Germany in November! Already last autumn, the Brits fascinated their fans with their spectacular live show. The fantastic light installations, the rich sound, the grandiose performance of singer Holly Martin (who was not present on the album) caused shining eyes within the excited audience.

Since the shows were sold-out very fast and ARCHIVE had so much fun playing in Germany, the band decided to play additional shows. The project around masterminds Darius Keeler und Danny Griffiths is playing in five cities who were not on the route so far, the second show took place last Saturday in Bochum. The successful album ‘The False Foundation’ is again in the centre of the show. But of course also hits from older albums are present in the setlist. It is a miracle how a band can arrange its music in such a varied kind but still stays true to its own remarkable style. ARCHIVE surprise always, especially on stage. It is always a special event for anyone when the sounds are transformed to a wonderful show. Support act this time was the Swiss band ONE SENTENCE. SUPERVISOR, also a big surprise.

One Sentence. Supervisor

Donat Kaufmann and Dominik Meuter are not in the mood for Berlin. "If all the young bands go there, nothing happens here," they say. They stay with their band ONE SENTENCE. SUPERVISOR in Switzerland, more precisely in Baden, to conquer the world from there. But the band already travelled a lot. ONE SENTENCE. SUPERVISOR has already played in Asia, has been a guest at Sziget festival in Budapest and at several other festivals across Europe. So far, the band released two albums, last one, ‘Temporär Music 1-13‘, last year via Oh, Sister Records. ONE SENTENCE. SUPERVISOR make music in the tradition of Krautrock. The beats create danceable-hymnal grooves, the riffs of the guitars float through the room, and the dark lyrics are sung in English. There is also a lot of Psychedelia in the music of the young Swiss band. Sounds retro and modern alike. https://www.onesentencesupervisor.com / https://www.facebook.com/onesentencesupervisor

Music & Performance
It was early when the show started. Already at seven, the support act entered the stage. The stage of the Zeche is not so big and first thing you mentioned was that it was completely packed with the equipment of ARCHIVE and ONE SENTENCE, SUPERVISOR, who opened the show. Latter one even placed a beach umbrella on stage. The Swiss call their music “Temporär Musik”. You do not know what it is? You learned during their show! It was somehow happy but also sad at the same time, influenced by Post Rock and Indie with ling instrumental passages in-between the sparse vocals. The audience was into the band’s music from the very start. If you ask me, the set could have lasted longer than only thirty minutes. When the band left the stage, they were rewarded with loud applause. In my opinion a band you should keep an eye on. I liked it a lot!

The ARCHIVE project started around Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths in 1994. Together with the female singer Roya Arab and the young rapper Rosko John, the band released their first album ‘Londinium’ on Island Records in 1996. But ARCHIVE was doomed to break up the same year due to internal problems. The bands reformation, however, came to pass already in 1997 with an altered line-up surrounding Keeler and Griffiths with which they recorded and released the follow-up ‘Take My Head’ in 1999 which in hindsight is described by the band as their least favourite. The next three albums, released in the following years brought them back to a more progressive approach to composing their music after the poppy foray with the second album. That back to the roots attitude brought forth milestones such as ‘Noise’ and a few years later the highly regarded ‘Lights’. ‘Controlling Crowds’, released in 2009 started of a four part conceptual cycle completed within the same year. The album, ‘Restriction’, was released in January 2015, followed not by ‘The False Foundation’, out in October 2016. The release was followed by a tour and now, the band was embarking to the second part of their “The False Foundation” tour. ARCHIVE is Danny Griffiths (keys, samples, e-guitar, bass), Darius Keeler (synths, piano), Dave Penney (guitar, vocals), Pollard Berrier (vocals, guitar), Maria Q (vocals), Rosko John (vocals), Steve Davis (bass), Steve Harris (guitar), Jonathan Noyce (bass), Smiley (drums) and Holly Martin (vocals). http://www.archiveofficial.com / http://www.facebook.com/ArchiveOfficial

Music & Performance
I think I can say that I really love that band. I have seen ARCHIVE several times in the past and I really like the new album. Of course I had to visit a show of the second part of the “False Foundation” tour. The biggest difference to the first part was the absence of female vocals. It was a completely different concert experience to me. The stage design was alike the first part of the tour with a curtain, consisting of white thin threads, being placed behind the band and being used as a canvas for various projections, including live pictures filmed during the show. I already mentioned that the small stage was packed with the equipment and so, there was not much space for seven people there. The show started with ‘Driving in Nails’ from the current album before with ‘Words on Signs’ already an older one followed. In the course of the show, many more songs of the current release were on the list, like my favourites ‘The False Foundation’ and ‘Stay Tribal’. Already quite early in the set, one of my all-time favourites, ‘Fuck U’ which was not played during the first part of the tour, was presented by Dave Pen. Amazing!

Due to a missing female singer, the setlist of course differed quite a lot to the first part of the tour. I liked the new set, including also ‘Sane’ or the fantastic ‘Bullets’ from the ‘Controlling Crowds’ album. ARCHIVE concerts always mean great art and perfect musical craftsmanship. The audience danced and screamed and clapped... or listened attentively. Until… yeah, until the last song of the main set, ‘Blue Faces’, a really calm song. The pleasure of listening to this song was suddenly disturbed. Not because the band was bad, no, because of some people in the audience who thought it is a good idea to talk loudly, lough or make other noises. Others in the audience were not happy of that and commanded the group to “shut up”. Even “Silence!” shouts in the audience were heard. But the group did not really care, much to the discontent of the rest of the audience and I think I even saw Dave Pen looking angry into the direction of the troublemakers. Under huge applause, ARCHIVE left the stage afterwards just to come back for ‘Bright Lights’, another quite calm song. And the disturbance from the right side continued. Maybe it was because of the group that all of a sudden, some people in that corner got rough against each other. Not nice! Luckily, people could be calmed down and so, the security did not need to interfere.

Without any more disturbance, the show went on with powerful, pulsating ‘Feel It’ from the ‘Restrictions’ album. On other cities, ARCHIVE had played ‘Controlling Crowds’ instead, a song I also would have loved to see on the list and one that has not been played in Cologne during the first part of the tour - MY concert of the tour. Again I missed this one, I could not believe it! The show finally ended with fantastic ‘Numb’, huge applause and a happy band. Too bad, that there was no more encore. I read that i.e. in Bremen, they played a short version of ‘Again’, just like in some cities during the first part of the tour. Needless to say that ‘Again’ was also NOT played on my concert in Cologne during the “False Foundation Part One”. Maybe, this time the following party was once again the reason why there was no more addition. But still, the concert was fantastic. ARCHIVE are still one of those bands who put a spell on you with their concerts. Genre borders? There are none for this art collective. Art Rock? Electro? Post Rock? Hip Hop? Anything is in there and more. I hope my next ARCHIVE show comes soon!
