Big Boy

What really led to the foundation of BIG BOY is as unknown as any other background information, but the story we know is as follows. The man named BIG BOY is said to be born in Sweden, served in the foreign legions for a couple of years before he was discharged (dishonourably). He spent a few weeks in a sanatorium (To visit a friend) until Freddy Mercury manifested and told him to found the greatest Rock’n’Roll band the world has ever seen. Actually we only know a few things for sure.

They enjoy a great popularity on MySpace and they’ve released two albums so far, called ‘Hail the Big Boy’ (2007) and ‘Ponygirl’ (2009). The line-up is as follows: Big Boy (vocals), Thor (guitar), A.K (bass) and Darek (drums). http://www.myspace.com/hailthebigboy

Music & Performance
BIG BOY had two big problems on the show in Essen. Firstly, there were barely 40 people attending the show and secondly, the audience wasn’t exactly what you’d call motivated. The latter fact later led to one member of the crew suddenly stepping on stage to vent his displeasure in telling them to finally put the cameras down and participate. I’m still not sure if this was for real or staged. Anyway, back to what’s important here. Even though it wasn’t really sold-out, the band didn’t show a bit less enthusiasm on stage as they did when I saw them last time. Just a short intro and then the relentless chords of ‘Heroin Heroine’ came upon us with BIG BOY and his company racing back and forth, forwards and backwards across the stage. ‘Terror Era’ walked the same marching route and was simply crafted for having a lot of fun.

Fun you could also have with the hilarious intermezzos between the different songs that in parts weren’t really clean like e.g. the showering with the strident crew member my colleague won, randomly picked by BIG BOY himself. Before ‘Zillion Dollar Sadist’ hit our ears that crew member had his say and the behaviour of the audience actually changed slowly and they started to move along more and more. It even went up to a point that, when asked if they wanted to, a young couple was picked to join them on stage for ‘Hail The Big Boy’ to sing and perform a bit. The whole thing looked a little hilarious and by that added a lot making this a funny closer of the main set. The little audience then made some noise to call the band back.

Even though BIG BOY expressed that he was already on the way back to the hotel and only forgot his sleeping mask he couldn’t do without, one last song was presented with ‘One Good Reason’. Afterwards, the people were released into the night. The protagonists on stage gave everything and laid down a great show! It was just bad luck with the crowd.
