Interview with

Mike Hranica (Screaming Vocals) of The Devil Wears Prada

‘With Roots Above and Branches Below’ is the third accomplishment by metal-core act THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA who has proven themselves worthy of being consider musicians. Vocalist Mike Hranica said, "We're really excited for this album. It's definitely going to be darker, heavier, and more epic. Expect a much heavier, more metal record." Now we had the chance to ask vocalist Mike a few questions.

Reflections of Darkness (RoD): The name of the band THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA is interesting to say the least and sounds as if there is a story behind it; and there is also a movie / book with the same name. Where did the name come from and what is the story?
Mike: Came off the book before it was a bestseller. We thought it was clever so we went with it and that was kind of a bad idea.

RoD: Can you briefly summarize how the band formed and what you do in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA?
Mike: Dan wanted to play in a hardcore band so he started getting dudes together and I ended up trying out accidently and doing vocals.

RoD: Your lyrics are infused with heavy detail and raw emotion. What is it that normally gives you inspiration when writing lyrics and is there a concept behind the music you create?
Mike: I'm not sure what inspires me to write, but it's always been something I've been interested in. The primary concept behind TDWP is morals not materials.

RoD: Your new album ‘With Roots Above and Branches Below’ is coming out. How has the reactions been thus far? What can fans expect when they listen to your music?
Mike: The reaction has been excellent and fans can expect a more mature TDWP.

RoD: How do you think you will affect the music scene you are part of? What are your thoughts on the growing popularity in it as well?
Mike: The current scene can be a mess and wonderful at the same time. Growing popularity is good; I just hope kids don't get caught on to the wrong things.

RoD: How many years have you guys played the Vans Warped Tour?
Mike: Just once, this will be our second year.

RoD: Many of your songs are so hard and intense that I am sure they translate well into a live setting taking on a whole new life in front of a live audience. How does it make you feel when the emotion and power that you envisioned in the recording studio, come to life while playing in front of a crowd?
Mike: It feels great. We are more of a live band than a studio band so playing shows is always awesome.

RoD: What are the upcoming plans for TDWP?
Mike: Warped Tour this year and hopefully some international touring at the end of the year.

RoD: How has MySpace and the internet impacted your band and do you think downloading helps or hinders the artists?
Mike: I hate downloading, but MySpace and the internet in general is a great promotional tool for bands.

RoD: What is the toughest lesson you ever learned in the studio and on the stage?
Mike: In the studio, keep tracking takes until we get the perfect one. And I'm not sure about live.

RoD: What bands would you like to tour with and who has been your favourite to tour with this far? Any particular reason?
Mike: A PARKWAY FRIVE and or SLIPKNOT tour would be awesome. We have toured with A DAY TO REMEMBER a bunch, it's always awesome and they are our best friends.

RoD: Every band has its musical influences. What are some of the other bands and artists that have greatly influenced you guys and your music?
Mike: Underoath, As I Lay Dying, and a million other bands.

RoD: What's your reaction when/if a fan told you a very meaningful statement such as "Your music changed my life"! Has this ever happened to you?
Mike: It happens quite often and it is always awesome knowing that our message is getting across to fans.

RoD: All of that passion that you play with must be tough on you physically. How do you prepare for the physical demands of a tour?
Mike: It's difficult to prepare, but basically your body just has to get broken in, get sore, and get used to playing shows.

RoD: Thanks a lot for the interview.
