HUMAN SCULPTURE is a five piece from Finland who just barely after a year put out their debut EP. It’s furious, heavy, and technical at times following the paths of bands like the recent DECAPITATED or AT THE GATES with a touch of MESHUGGAH. The guitars hold of heavy chugging formation that often breaks into more melodic sections on the first track, ‘Deconstruction’. A lot of the vocal work is reminiscent of recent DECAPITATED with a mix between roars and shrieks; not quite the typical death metal growl some might be expecting. The drums are well layered with the guitars so they don’t feel like they’re on autopilot nor are they so far that they create a wall of sound that blots out all the other instruments. ‘The Wait’ is by far the heaviest track on the EP considering how seamlessly everything flows together and there are fewer pauses between the riffs. There is no lack of melody though, which especially picks up halfway through the song. Fans will find the technical elements here the closest to MESHUGGAH.
For those seeking the closest thing to “usual” death metal, it can be found in ‘The Heart’. Here, HUMAN SCULPTURE churns out slow, but grinding riffs over and over in almost a militant fashion. The bass is much clearer compared to usual thanks to eased down pace, and it also allows listeners to enjoy the more technical work of all the instruments together. Some could even consider hints of groove metal involved with how the rhythms- especially near the end as things really go to a crawl- are constructed to be a bit catchier rather than blindingly brutal… even though this is a very brutal EP. Sadly, with only three tracks it doesn’t allow a full view into what HUMAN SCULPTURE are capable of, but ‘Our World Torn Down’ is a great introduction that shows a band with plenty of potential to become one of the heaviest things around.
