Album Review

THE GATHERING have been on the scene since 1989 and approached many styles within the span of their career. As for many bands a line-up change came along the way, and Anneke Van Giersbergen was replaced by Silje Wergeland. Throughout there is a lot of experimentation feel within its dreamy, trippy soundscapes. At times the dreaminess though lost me as it felt lukewarm and the atmosphere would have had to be more thickly and intricately built as goes with bands such as ANATHEMA, but as it seems not THE GATHERING.

Though it’s interesting and even beautiful in places it just doesn’t have enough bite and flesh to sink deeper for me except its fourth song ‘Heroes for Ghosts’ where finally the atmosphere thickens, the tempo is just right. Although Wergeland’s vocal is wonderful it’s also too angelic, too sweet and can feel one-dimensional for it, so it seems that less of it here made the song into more, and even grew more interesting with her vocal more secondary and complimentary. Only ‘Missing Season’ picked up the mood again though not as much as the fourth track, the rest followed the case of the first part. Though I’ve not really become enchanted by this album, I think there will be plenty of their fans happy with it, those who like airier composition with a sense of crystalline clarity with some unexpected effects will certainly enjoy it.
