Album Review

JEX THOTH is a San Francisco based Doom / Psychedelic Rock band (some people might refer it to the metal genre), whose name derives from singer Jessica Toth (and an Egyptian god) and initially was called TOTEM. The name was also mentioned in the “retro hype” of the recent past. However, you should not peg a band as "retro" just because it reminds you of the sixties or seventies. JEX THOTH protrudes. The sound is authentic, memorable, and with this - their second - album, especially fresh and also quite modern. Sometimes with a certain pressure, as known also from its predecessor album. The "doom" sound is still present but not that distinctive anymore, the Hammond organ plays a minor role, the songs sound less harsh.

By the song ‘Into a Sleep’ you realize that the retro-talk is out of place here. The charismatic voice and the gentle sound of the song invite you to just relax. No later than by the song ‘Keep Your Weeds’ you are caught by the sound. An outstanding tune which certainly carries conviction to listeners who have been deterred by the gritty sound to date. At no time the instruments interfere. The timeless, dreamlike journey is rounded out with the song ‘Psyar’. JEX THOTH have created an outstanding album. A perfect musical interaction between yesterdays and modern age. ‘Blood Moon Rise’ has exceeded many expectations.
