Album Review
Maybe it's a climate-thing, but somehow the most oblique and dark music comes traditionally from the Northern countries. Another confirmation to this would be the Swedish duo HAUL. The mastermind Pehr Herb is rather unlucky in sense of commercial success, but it has never been an obstacle for him. He seems to be one of the most dedicated musicians, creating music for over than fifteen years. He is known for his DJ-activity and other projects such as KRETIPLETI and MILITANT CHEERLEADERS ON THE MOVE. Luckily for the listeners Herb keeps creating new music, and now as HAUL. The musicians suggest to think of this project "as a dark monotone noisy post punk journey".
If it is possible that the best vibrations of JOY DIVISION and SISTERS OF MERCY were preserved and mixed with the best of EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN and SÓLSTAFIR, than they would turn into HAUL's 'Separation'. Like a call from the past, the album invites the listener to the decadent post punk world of atmospheric guitars and mystical synths, decorated with the help of guest-vocalist Håkan Paulsson (SANCTUM). There is nothing unnatural or forced in those tracks. 'Separation' is amazing in its simplicity, purity and roughness. The musicians didn't try to create the new wave or revisit old classics. HAUL is the thing in itself, as if post punk era would never end. This album is probably the most honest and therefore the best record of the recent years in the Industrial scene.
