Album Review
Just a few weeks after the single ‘Der HDL Song’ surprised and pleased me at the same time JASPER puts out his very first official release entitled ‘Neidlos’. With the first song ‘Der Sonne entgegen’ (Towards the Sun) we’re lyrically breaking new grounds. Leaving confided territory and try out something to experience life in new ways. Accompanied is this light-footed tune by rhythmical acoustic guitar and discreet drumming. The next two songs on the album are the ironic ‘Der HDL Song’ and the melancholic ‘Nördlich’; both being on the preceding single and also the following ‘In meinen Armen’ is a mellow track; an honest love declaration to a very special person coming within a whisker of cheesiness now and then.
‘Neidlos’ is a different calibre brings up a trenchant juxtaposition of two different generations: His own past teenage generation and the new one with its Emo styling and Pop idol stuff embedded into propelling rums and pacey guitars. A poignant and oppressing song dedicated to a past friend who in the course of his life more and more goes to the bad and as well portrays his own and the family’s feelings. As you can guess the music for such lyrics isn’t any less of a melancholic matter. The turnabout from this track to the next one comes quite harsh and unexpected with Samba-esque, Latin rhythms while Jasper with a wink cries on our shoulder about his very large-hearted girlfriend ‘Lioba’.
I wish we would see more of such young, talented musicians as JASPER is one popping up in the not too distant future with a refreshingly uncomplicated approach to making music that is both for the heart and for the mind with witty lyrics and without overloaded arrangements. One can only hope that his already existing fan base keeps faith with him and that he gains many more.
