Album Review

We could speak volumes about Nick Cave who is well-known not only as a unique musician but also as a writer and a film score composer. Such names as BOYS NEXT DOOR, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY probably are familiar only to a narrow circle of listeners but I guess everyone at least heard about THE BAD SEEDS. So, Cave seems to be a talented and versatile artist and we can’t depreciate his merits. Anyway, it’s hard to say how much the new project of the rock legend called GRINDERMAN differs from its predecessors, but one sure thing is that this music is meant mostly for devoted fans of the style.

The band’s sophomore album entitled simply ‘Grinderman 2’ doesn’t impress with bright and catchy tunes: the compositions are rather leisured and indistinct, when only the recognizable vocals and original arrangements add some necessary colouring. The interesting rhythm section includes various drums and percussions while quite blurry and a bit whining guitars seem to get stuck playing one and the same chord. On the other hand, very accessible and not too complicated lyrics can be regarded as a big plus for the album as a listener has an opportunity to better understand the songs in whole.

Thus, ‘Grinderman 2’ contains nine unpretentious tracks that don’t strike you with their diversity and power and indeed they are quite mellow and even slack yet Cave’s fans won’t be disappointed. Besides, some may want to listen to the album just in order to get an overall impression or expand their musical horizon.
