Album Review

If anyone in Germany speaks about music, he’s always drawing lines. Here’s Punk, there’s Pop. Here Indie, there Mainstream. Here’s respect, there’s lots of laughter… JUPITER JONES have never known these limitations. Tattooed on the forearm of singer Nicholas Müller you can read one of the most important lines from the band HOT WATER MUSIC: „Live your heart and never follow.“ That’s exactly, what JUPITER JONES adhere since seven years. They shout „Hello fear, you asshole!“ and they sing „Oh, if I’d lose you“. They accompany moshpits full of sweat and tears as well as the Kapuzinerkloster Cochem with an Acoustic-Session. They combine the energy of Gainesville-Rock with melodies and lines, that would move anybody been so lucky to meet them. They don’t ask for a membership card. They don’t draw lines… -Oliver Uschmann about JUPITER JONES-

It’s always a problem to review bands, you’re well-known to, especially when they changed their label from independent to Major. Normally there are lots and lots of concerns and misgivings that everything has changed. In this case, there’s no exception. For sure, JUPITER JONES doesn’t sound anymore like on their debut ‘Raum um Raum’ in all facets. The question is whether this is good or bad. But it also is a fact that other acts like MUFF POTTER (they did not survive their change from Indie to Major) or KETTCAR, BLUMFELD, TOCOTRONIC or other ones from the so called “Hamburger Schule” somehow didn’t keep up with fellows and own releases or simply do not exist anymore. Therefore there’s a gap JUPITER JONES is willing to fill - and they’re quite in the position to do so.

Hardly anyone I know is able to be not fascinated by their great lyrics… and Nicholas Müller’s very own voice. Songs like ‘Still’ (first single and in fact a little bit too mainstream, in my opinion) and ‘Berlin’ (that song gives me goose bumps all the time - I’ve listened to this song roundabout 30 times over and over again… and it’s still touching), the balladesque tracks show how capable JUPITER JONES are to describe situations in detail. Maybe that’s the fact, why Oliver Uschmann (one of my favourite authors ever - try ‘Hartmut und ich’ and all his other stuff! NOW!) wrote some words about them. Maybe there’s the fascination, the fact why I’m into this band… For sure, they’re not the same anymore - they’re grown up somehow. There’s a certain development, I cannot describe and therefore I’m not able to judge whether it’s great or lousy. Maybe this will take another release. For now, I’ll emphasize the words Oliver Uschmann wrote:

“The release ‘Jupiter Jones’ goes beyond limitation. It’s Rock, it’s Punk, it’s Pop, it’s Singer / Songwriter, but most of all it’s a manifest about how to disarm your listeners without chumming up… and how to rehabilitate synthesizers! Producer Wolfgang Stach, who supervised even the last release, was helpful to SUCH A SURGE, BAP and BOSSE while his career; Mixer Michael Ilbert raised the sound of BEATSTEAKS, TOCOTRONIC and MANDO DIAO - oppositional artists, united by one thing: a character, that is distinctive. There’s no other band like JUPITER JONES , because no-one combines rough and soulful Rock in such a perfect way with the adequate words to the right music. In 2011 it’s time, that all people get aware of this, because everyone has a heart, that deserves to be touched in a grand way. And JUPITER JONES do not ask for a membership card…“.

I have nothing to add…
