Album Review

THE MESCALINE BABIES founded 2009 in Italy where rooted in an early eighties mixture from Death and Alternative Rock with some pieces from Punk Rock. After some EP releases they present now their debut album ‘Crush’. The band offers no revolutionary new musical ideas. Some darker well thought rock parts which carry us back to the early beginnings from bands like BAUHAUS, JOY DIVISION, THE CURE. A notoriously dark pulsating bass drives the songs onward. A strong and sinister voice changing from singing to screaming and talking combined with pure guitar sound produce a real retro style feeling. The opener ‘Distorted Youth’ starts with rough vocals and a tough music but offers nothing new and after a while it seems just as flat as some other tracks from this album. Few highlights are ‘Ashtray Head’ with its melodic worked out ideas or ‘Ultramarine Blue’ presenting a psychedelic essence and offers us the real talent and potential from THE MESCALINE BABYS.

The most excellent tracks are the slower ‘Heart Full Of Wine’ and ‘The Eternal Season’. With this two tracks the band show their talent and make it worth buying this album. Even ‘Cold Earth’ with variable changing guitar riffing toped by aggressive vocals and punk like feeling shows the strength and energy which could be existing in this album. ‘Crush’ is a mediocre record which lacks most time the necessary variety. The oblique vocals although fitting well into some passages may be quickly boring. There are unfortunately too few highlights and most of the songs are used as filling material. The sound is fairly excellent on the quieter parts and need a little more punch on the rock elements. ‘Crush’ is a really good advice if you want to relive the early days otherwise I guess this album is only for diehard fans.
