Album Review

‘Dark Endless’ is the debut album by Swedish black metal band MARDUK and was originally published in the 1992. CENTURY MEDIA, the current label of the band, now want their share of the pie either after there were several re-releases in the last years from this album. ‘Dark Endless’ in its original version has just an half an hour plaything time, but with this new added bonus tracks this re-release comes to about fifty minutes. You could hear clearly out the influence of Swedish Death Metal which already coined the debut from DARKTHRONE. Which comes partly due to the voice from Dread who use significantly lower growls than the drummer from MARDUK AfGravF who screeched one year after into the microphone to the later published ‘Those Of The Unlight’.

So overall, ‘Dark Endless’ sounds much more like death metal than its successor but also includes parts from the later enforced Black Metal. And you could still hear nothing like the crazy speed orgies like ‘Panzer Division Marduk’. There is also some icy-rage stuff and wildly blasted parts of course,, but also a lot of mid-tempo and morbid death metal riffing. People who have learned about MARDUK in the last ten to twelve years will surely be surprised from the first listen to ‘Dark Endless’ because the Swedes sound here distinctly different. Which part would be preferred of the MARDUK style Black Metal is more a matter of taste. But with excellent songs like ‘Still Fucking Dead (Here’s no Peace)’ and ‘The Sun Turns Black At Night’, MARDUK already offer something special at that time.

In addition to the intro, there are six additional bonus tracks. The four live songs are from the year 1991 and landed all but one later on this album. The recordings are, like expected fairly crude including clearly audible noise which you could even hear within the loudest clatter. But the songs are quite audible and it’s not more necessarily from twenty year old live-recordings. But the sound quality reach another basement within the two rehearsal versions of ‘Dark Council / Departure From The Mortals’ and ‘Within The Abyss’. Within this two songs a significantly dull sound adds to the already familiar background noise which makes this shots have only a maximum value to collectors. Those who don’t already own ‘Dark Endless’ are well advised to buy this album.
