Album Review
OVERKILL is an American Thrash Metal band, formed in 1980. Vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni are the only founding members left. OVERKILL are also among the most successful and established American Thrash Metal bands. They have been releasing albums continuously every two to three years, and their most recent output ‘White Devil Armory’ already marks studio album number 18.
‘White Devil Armory’ includes eleven tracks and makes up for a total playtime of 50 minutes. After a short intro ‘XDM’, the opener ‘Armorist’ sets in and marks for a fast-forward beginning with rapid riffs and Blitz’s characteristic vocals. It already becomes clear that OVERKILL continue their very own style and add a few modern elements every now and then. Moreover, the song also demonstrates the band’s guitar skills and ability to blend speed with remarkable but not too catchy melodies. The latter becomes inter alia audible in ‘Pig’. The following ‘Bitter Pill’ is a grooving and heavy mid-tempo title, whereas ‘Where There’s Smoke’ is again a fast and harsh song, which also resembles older works of OVERKILL. The song structure of ‘Freedom Rings’ includes a lot of variation in speed and also allows for certain technical gimmicks. ‘Another Day To Die’ is again rather vocal-dominated, whereas the drums are the driving force of ‘It’s All Yours’.
The concluding ‘In The Name’ includes a lot of rather high-pitched screams as well as a relatively harmonic riff-section throughout the middle-part of the song. However, the ending of the song is too predictable and pseudo-catchy. To conclude, ‘White Devil Armory’ is a solid album, which is produced in a modern way and still includes characteristic and traditional trademarks of OVERKILL. Fans of fast and aggressive Thrash Metal will surely not be disappointed with this solid piece.
