25th anniversary of MESHUGGAH approaches with two releases – the reissue of ‘I’ and a live recording entitled as ‘The Ophidian Trek’, both out on the same date (26th September). They stand as separate music entities and yet they also fit together, the twinning comes as a good move. The sequence of chosen songs for the live – ‘The Ophidian Trek’ comes out really well too. Starting with a menacing ‘Swarmer’ with flies buzzing over subtle tremor prepares you for an Odyssey through Hell. There’s very little of a crowd noise so it even feels like an album rather than a live record; the little bit that there is serves only as a reminder of it being such.
With MESHUGGAH I always get the feeling that their music actually grows into a physically tangible thing, a towering sort of a Golem, after all he was a creation of a man (more precisely a rabbi) enlivened by song too and to compare further with MESHUGGAH’s music you never know if it’s about to either protect or destroy you. Well, it’s not fun and it’s more on the intellectual side of Metal, not just because there’s jazzy elements, simply it’s a just not mainstream for a reason, nevertheless, totally great if you don’t expect orthodoxy, not just in genre of Metal but music in general. Recommended!
