Album Review

Does NAPALM DEATH have to be introduced? They are veterans on extreme metal scene since 1981, a band that defined Grindcore, so perhaps no intro is needed and therefore let’s cut straight to the chase – their latest album ‘Apex Predator – Easy Meat’. It fiercely attacks capitalism for the misery of poverty and death they accuse it causes with its limitless consumerist greed. The ‘Apex Predator’ is spitting vitriol and fury; they try their hardest to kick you out of apathy though without political movement you’re sort of Che on your own. Nevermind, if they made you feel like a revolutionary for some forty minutes, to vent your alienation against the system that is good as well. There are death grooves, there’s thrash, there’s punk, there’s killer riffs and there’s a lot of gritty spit from Mr Greenway.

Highlights for me were the starting album titled song; it begins prayer-like, or in another light, with a prophecy before a cacophony evoking atmosphere of dystopia and intensification of anger within the vocal. It lured me into the album very well or the unexpected chorus in ‘Hierarchies’. As a whole it’s cohesive, they don’t blindly utilise all the tricks in the book to showcase technical skills just to churn out narcissistic album, and they have thrown themselves into it because they give a shit about music and the world. Not everyone will like its message but at least they’ve got a strong conviction and they are authentic in what they are doing. Above all that they’ve turned out a great album and that’s all that needs saying at the end of the day.
