There is no need to introduce this legendary Swedish Death / Black Metal band named in honour of one of the mightiest Babylon gods. MARDUK still absorbs influences of these two extreme-metal styles, diluting true black with pure historical lyrics and speeding a bit too slow Swedish death. Fans of the formation can still remember ‘La Grand Dance Macabre’, back in 2001 which became the highest point of the band’s creativity. One may be sure that MARDUK didn’t change the course during 15 years and the musicians still find something to improve and progress. Their new album has not become an exception: you can hear everything you expect to hear and even if you are not a fan of such kind of music you can easily realize the seriousness and profundity of the approach.
Of course it’s also thanks to the competition which makes everything work: no extreme band in Scandinavia can hold its status for so long if it isn’t qualified and original enough. Thus ‘Frontschwein’ definitely proves that. Melody lines become more solid and intense and a listener understands lyrics without looking into the booklet. Growl is sometimes varied with a scream and recitative. There are strangely slow compositions on the album which can be hardly called ballads but they don’t contain any blast-beats and roaring vocals. The audience seems to be rather predictable but however the band makes some steps towards other, less extreme genres, at least, implicitly. As for devoted fans, they will definitely appreciate the new work of the legend.
