Album Review

For die-hard fans of LETZTE INSTANZ the waiting time for a proper new full-length of the band still was too long, even if it was shortened a bit by ‘Die Weiße Reise’ and ‘Das Weiße Lied’ but now it’s not long anymore and ‘Schuldig’ will be available at your favourite record store.

‘Schuldig’ begins with the intro ‘Mea Culpa’ through which disquieting sounds drift. Sinister chorals appear and fade away. When the track seamlessly migrates into the first proper piece ‘Mein Engel’ it’s like a hammer blow when a phat axe of hard guitars appears. Yeah, the band increased the harshness degree audibly but there still are the distinct sound of violin and cello and of course Holly’s unmistakable vocals which are somewhat darker this time. An anthem follows with ‘Flucht ins Glück’ and the guitars now take second place behind the strings while a driving rhythm sets the pace. ‘Dein Licht’, a somewhat driving but at the same time melancholic number with splendid piano play by partner in Crime LEANDRA! It’s of those songs putting you into the perspective of the narrator, feeling what he feels. Great!

‘Mein Leben’ shifts into down-tempo areas; is a pretty solemn song with droning guitars under textures of dramatic strings with a clear message “I want to live my life” Another collaboration winds up with ‘Der Garten’, on which Holly is joined by Turkish singer Aylin Aslim for a contrasting duet that could become a club hit and would be a sure crowd pleaser on concerts. The next tour is coming soon and who knows what will happen?!  ‘Wann’ which is closing ‘Schuldig’ is hard to beat in terms of emotionality and appears like the musical version of the symbolic fight against the raging sea which is life trying not to drown; a thing you can’t do on your own for long.

The last regular albums of LETZTE INSTANZ didn’t appeal to me really ‘Schuldig’ managed to do so. The increased harshness in some songs fits perfectly and with ‘Dein Licht’ or ‘Wann’ for instance comprises wonderfully balladry tunes.
