Album Review

LAISSEZ FAIRE, a band from Thessalonica in Greece, has been previously included in several compilations and now finally they’re releasing their debut album ‘No Land For Escape’. The music bears many admirations to the era of 80’s and ‘90’s, a darker, moodier version of THE HUMAN LEAGUE, and many other comparisons spring to mind. Most of the tracks switch from being sung by their female vocalist Helen Kazatza and Mikidis Alex. The melancholy feel is very soft, there is nothing abrasive or startling to any of the songs, and they feel smooth and flowing without an obstacle. The problem is that they don’t stir anything beyond the surface of this.

The first song, ‘Electrify’, sounds as if set to be a hit of this with its catchiness, but it fails to captivate or stand out. There are flashes of intensity at times as in ‘Pulling Me Down’, and a more dramatic approach on ‘Escape’, two of its best songs. The closing song ‘Angels’ is interesting with its echoing vocal and sample effect. However of these strong points, the overall feeling is truly ‘laissez faire’, in the state of let be, without tension and in a sense of opiate indifference even to its sadness and slightly dark feel, they remain lukewarm. Although the album is pleasant and enjoyable, its harmoniousness beautiful, well played and sung it’s not very strong or distinctive.
