Single Review

Imagine that back in 1981 you were trapped inside a cryogenic capsule and that you are a Goth. What music do you listen in the 2011 when by sheer luck you’ve been released? Don’t go that far - the answer is in front of you. You put on the stereo the tape of LES FLEURS DU MAL. And because some Goths are “funeral crushers”, you know the kind - three steps forward, three steps back and attitude of mourning mothers - they will find enjoyment in this new tape! Besides all that and under the completely unimaginative title of their band what new does this Swedish band bring? Well, nothing much unless the attitude of Andrew Eldritch (the singer of SISTERS OF MERCY) is to be considered as exciting.

By the way, the live performances of SISTERS OF MERCY are a waste of money. I’m hoping that at least LES FLEURS DU MAL on that front will be better than that. In this, their first EP they explore that “infinite” sadness of the outcast, of fantasying one’s own death (like teenagers do, thinking who’s going to attend it and if they’re going to cry), and the burdens of the night. Maybe in the future we will hear much better stuff from this band; but up till now, in the confrontation of the man with the world they didn’t choose the irrationalism like Baudelaire did but that of theatricalism. Give it a go, especially if you’re a CD collector for the ‘My Funeral’...
