Interview with

Francesca Chiara (vocals) of The LoveCrave

This year, Italian band THE LOVECRAVE released the sophomore album entitled ‘Soul Saliva’ which may even surpass the success of its predecessor. That’s why I took the opportunity to interview vocalist Francesca Chiara who was so kind to tell about the new CD, the sources of inspiration for it, the band’s touring life and some other interesting issues. Read the article below for the details.

Reflections of Darkness (RoD): Hi Francesca! First of all, thank you for the great album. How do you feel the fans would anticipate it?
Francesca: Hi! Thanks I’m glad you like it! I have no idea if people out there will like ‘Soul Saliva’. For sure we really did our best this time so if someone decides to buy it he has to know that he is buying a big piece of our heart which is worth it I think.

RoD: It’s definitely an interesting work with an interesting title. Could you, please, comment on it? What does ‘Soul Saliva’ mean in your interpretation?
Francesca: It’s like a piece of body coming out of your soul. We wanted to give the idea that there is a lot of instinct in the music but there is also a lot of mind and spirit.

RoD: The process of recording the songs was a pleasure for you or mostly hard work?
Francesca: I love the studio work; it’s the most creative work in music to me. At the same time it is really hard and sometimes you stay up all night just to find a little sound which is annoying. But when you want everything to be perfect I think you can hear the result at the end.

RoD: Where do you get the ideas for writing your songs? What emotions do you need to write them? What inspired you for this very album?
Francesca: My life changed in the past year because I had a baby and probably the lyrics of the album are all connected to this in some way. The songs speak about the world and what is wrong in it; they speak about silent pain and frustration that need to explode out because life is always worth living.

RoD: How could you describe your sound? What makes it so distinctive?
Francesca: The fact that makes our sound different is that we all listen to different music styles and the mix is becoming more interesting through the years. Tank comes from the 80s (KISS, JOURNEY, AC/DC), Simon is more street (GUNS’N’ROSES, SKID ROW…), Bob is more into musicianship styles and I am more into gothic rock and wave styles. The result is a strange kind of gothic rock that unusually has a rocking background and not a sad or depressive mood.

RoD: Speaking about ‘The Angel and the Rain’, did you expect that your debut work would be so successful or was it a total surprise?
Francesca: Of course it was a surprise. As a first album it really sold well and people liked it a lot. I hope that this new album will give one more push to the band.

RoD: How do you like the touring life? Does it bring only positive moments?
Francesca: Not now actually that I have to leave my baby at home. Touring is very stressful and it’s not the best part of the music life I think. I can’t hide that we have a lot of fun travelling and playing around but we are a small band and a tour is not only a matter of playing the show and sleeping in nice hotels like big bands do. For us everything is harder.

RoD: And what do you do when you are not touring? Can you describe your ideal day off?
Francesca: Sleep, sleep, sleep, read, TV, sleep….

RoD: If you had to choose a quote to describe what motivates you day by day, what would it be?
Francesca: We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.

RoD: Do you remember the first time when you performed on the stage?
Francesca: Oh God yes! It was awful, I am not a very precise singer but in that gig I think I did not catch one single note!

RoD: When did you decide to become a singer? Did your parents support you?
Francesca: No my parents did not support me at all; they just did not stop me. But I knew that they had other plans for me. Music is like a disease, you can’t escape it if it catches you. And it caught me when I was 13.

RoD: How do your live shows usually look like? Do you often try to be spontaneous onstage, to improvise?
Francesca: Yes I feel totally free, sometimes music is even less important than the freedom I feel. And I don’t care if songs don’t come out perfectly as long as there is the good energy between the members of the band and with the audience.

RoD: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received from your fans?
Francesca: A book written by a German girl, she gave me her only copy.

RoD: Are there any bands that you admire a lot and can call yourself a fan of them?
Francesca: I admire bands like IRON MAIDEN, AC/DC…bands that are “old” and still play 200 shows a year. This is Rock’n’Roll!

RoD: What was the last concert you have visited?
Francesca: It’s been a while now because I can’t really move from home with a small baby. The last show I’ve been to is of a friends’ band called NOISE MACHINE.

RoD: How do you imagine the future of THE LOVECRAVE? Do you have any goals or plans?
Francesca: I learned not to imagine that future not to be disappointed… but I really hope that we will be able to build a solid fan-base so we can play music until the end of our days.

RoD: If you had one word to describe yourself, what would it be?
Francesca: Cat.

RoD: And, please in closing tell a few words to our readers.
Francesca: Thanks a lot to all the people who support us and write us all the time, we feel so grateful and we always hope not to disappoint you. Thank you for the interview!!!
