Album Review

“The usage of Pro Tools enables one to bring everything to perfection – that’s exactly, what we didn’t want. We wanted a lively, organic sound of real instruments. David [Botrill] was able to record that on tape. He literally brought out the best in us and it was a great experience, to look over his shoulder. I’m not sure, if we could have managed that with another producer within that short spell…”
-Josh Rand about House Of Gold & Bones Part 1-

The 4th album of Corey Taylor’s (vocals) and James Root’s (guitars) [both SLIPKNOT] “side project” STONE SOUR is called ‘House Of Gold & Bones, Part I’, that leaves no doubt that there’s another Part following in spring 2013. All in all there will be about 23 songs and both parts together will constitute a conception about a young “person trying to find himself, or herself. You know, everyone in their lives finds themselves inevitably at a crossroads when it comes to a personal evolution and whatnot, trying to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives”, according to Taylor.

An online comic novel, several special live shows and a kind of “scavenger hunt” were accompanying elements for this release and probably will be for the second part, too. Pretty much effort was made by the band and their management to place the release in a commercial way. The question is, whether the release can stand the promising addenda or were the addenda just whitewashing weak points of the release? Starting with ‘Gone Sovereign’ and ‘Absolute Zero’ the album’s smashing! Stomping beats, snotty guitars and impulsive drums form the basis for Taylor’s remarkable vocals. Following songs like ‘A Rumor Of Skin’, ‘The Travelers Pt. 1’ or ‘The Travelers Pt. 2’ are diversified and partly melodious while songs like ‘Tired’ and ‘RU486’ show the hard rock and grunge elements STONE SOUR are capable of.

But most of all, the sound is really astonishing! Producer David Bottrill (TOOL, MUSE, STAIND) recorded the songs on tape contrary to modern recording engineering. The result is a hard, deep and shatteringly powerful release that leaves nothing to be desired. Except the fact, that there should be a release of ‘House Of Gold & Bones, Part II’, INSTANTLY! STONE SOUR’s album ‘House Of Gold & Bones, Part I’ is definitely one of the best alternative/ rock albums in 2012…
