Album Review

Hamburg based Rock band SELIG was founded in 1992. In the 20th year of its existence, they now deliver an album being lyrically very clever and ironic at the same time. ‘Magma’ is a modern, fresh and vital album, meeting the perfectly the spirit of the times. With this album, the band delivers an angry but also introspective monster. Somehow, we are in the period of “post-reunion” in the SELIG history. While ‘Und endlich unendlich’ and the follower ‘Von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit’ were reflecting the process of self-discovery, ‘Magma’ now looks forward – and also the album reflects what’s happening around the band and in the world. Following this premises, the album is a wild ride through political and social history of the past 30 years. The album was recorded end of summer 2012 in the English East Midlands. While the previous albums were created autonomously, the band worked with a producer again for ‘Magma’. In Steve Power (who worked already with BLUR or ROBBIE WILLIAMS), they found the right man for this job.

When we turn to the album, the first thing we recognise is the perfect production. Soon, the first single found its place on this work. ‘Alles auf einmal’ is an intimate, biographical song with hit potential. Also songs like ‘Schwester Schwermut’ or ‘Bring mich heim’ have a lot of power and some easiness making you forget the world. On of course there is Plewka’s unique voice singing with lots of emotion. With ‘Magma’, SELIG found itself - as band, as friends and as musical collective. What’s left to say at the end? SELIG delivered a really good, well-produced album being not boring at all. The album will be released in various different versions, as well physically (standard edition in jewel case, ltd. deluxe edition in digipak with CD and DVD and a vinyl edition) and digital (standard album, deluxe edition and iTunes LP). For those, who want to see the band live as well: SELIG will be on big tour through Germany in March.
