Album Review
The Norwegian band’s seventh album and third in their Blackjazz trilogy is to hit shops in June but here we can already dissect it. They are said to engender Blackjazz, a genre emerged from fusing their beginnings as an acoustic jazz band at the end of the 90’s into elements of Metal, Prog-Rock and even classical music as they evolved through time. It’s all certainly worked towards a very interesting music that will spin out some references towards NIN (is it a coincidence that it’s produced by Sean Beavan who had his work cut out with NIN, MARYLIN MANSON, SLAYER etc.?), MESHUGGAH, throw in also a bit of Metalcore and Thrash, and yet as a result you’d expect a super hard mix, right, but yet there are times of sensibilities towards softer Rock, oh hell, this is some motherfucking witches cauldron!
It’s certainly one that takes a bit of time to absorb and digest. The manic sax and the jazzy parts are however what still make this best. The balance they sustain between all this is great because they pull off what could have just exploded as nothing but bombastic shit. The whole thing may sound as if it’s a really heady mix, but certainly you can have a lot of fun with it too – not to mention that it even at times really sounds like a satire (or can be taken as) - take ‘My Dying Drive’ when you let yourself go with the music. Love it or hate it, boring it at least isn’t!
