Album Review

The Djent inspired TESSERACT break the surface of their recent misfortunes i.e. the loss of singer Abisola Obasanya and tour cancellations with the release of their recent opus, ‘Altered State’. This record pushes the boundaries of their very potential as they increasingly explore every corner of their own sound, the haunting ambience, meditative intros, explosive guitar breakdowns and Ashe O’Hara’s empowering vocals that synergise almost perfectly with James Monteith’s artfully orchestrated rhythms.

The album is constructed into four movements: ‘Of Matter’, ‘Of Mind’, ‘Of Reality’ and ‘Of Energy’. This concept doesn’t in fact the separate the album in a whole but increases the scope of the progressive sound that TESSERACT does so wonderfully well. TESSERACT are never shy in experimenting, the beautiful inclusion of a saxophone solo in ‘Calabi-Yau’ and ‘Embers’ adds to the comprehensive depth of TESSERACT‘s dynamics. The lyrics are thought provoking and profound, which embosses the rich canvas of their musical diversity. In comparison to other bands out there, TESSERACT do indeed stand-alone, despite the fact that the ‘Djent’ sound was created by Swedish band, MESHUGGAH, TESSERACT carry it as if it’s their own.

The first listen of ‘Altered State’ will indeed hypnotise you, the second will possess you and thirdly, TESSERACT will be your new favourite band.
