Album Review
2000 saw, amongst many other things, the forming of TRIVIUM from Florida. They have mixed several styles together over their career and explored some themes around religions, myths amongst contemporary concern and are now on their sixth album effort, entitled as ‘Vengeance Falls’. Within this album they’ve decided to stick to the core of what they deem as what makes their music sound best with focusing on exploring and improving these traits. The emotion that fuelled this album is pointed at rage, stemming from some violent run-in with gangsters in Montana on their last tour, but it’s not just any kind of rage, it’s one that the band hopes will inspire people into creativity in whichever positive form, so this is the picture you get from the band’s statements about its making. I think that also there is a hope that within the accessibility, anthemic choruses which at times give it an epic feel would pool in more mainstream audience, most of which they’ve already tempted before anyhow. Throughout I’m getting a feeling that Heafy is not sure on his feet which means that it doesn’t always convince me to get behind songs but hesitate about them too.
It’s also not always bad to want to appeal to mainstream and put one’s bets on it but one has to put their faith into it full on, and in this I feel the band also hesitating. Did they really want it to sound that way? It seems like a marriage of convenience, not always bad but not exciting either. In ‘Through Blood And Dirt And Bone’ I had a feeling that the band was closely chasing one another rather than being in line, though in some ways it’d have been a nice way to spice things up it doesn’t seem to fire up as it wishes to. Wake (The End Is Nigh), starts out as a ballad but Heafy’s vocal doesn’t sound strong enough to pull it off, some of the lyrics are cringy and when it speeds and hardens up it really is a relief. Still, it’s enjoyable enough and they’re pretty good bunch of musicians to put it aside and enjoy the good parts – hooks when they get going well, nice solos and great drumming. When it comes to their hopes though I don’t think they are satisfied within this album, the rage is not really hot and the inspiration to go beyond pure enjoyment and create something good is not there.
