Album Review

PLASTIKMAN aka Richie Hawtin hasn't been working under the popular project's name ever since 2003. The occasion for him stepping back into the spotlight was an invitation to a fundraiser at the world renowned Guggenheim that actually triggered a sleuth of inspiration, resulting in 'EX', spreading across seven tracks. We should rather call it sections, because it's pretty much flowing seamlessly into one another. I've never been one to admit Techno is actually a musical genre, because I've seen too much reinforcing my opinion it's something people can go create on auto-pilot without the slightest notion of putting actual substance into it, and it works out. It also might be due to me looking at it from what I witnessed through mainstream media channels who are not particularly known for contributing to substantiate anything these days, So, yeah what has been put on disc here is indeed technoid, luckily refreshingly different from what I've known so far.

Even if the title says, recorded live, don't picture it like a concert since there's nothing like audience noise; it's purely about the music, which in the beginning, is merely a few sequences on 'Exposed'. It really takes its time to develop and if you're not used to it can be quite a tester for your patience. If you keep that up though you're rewarded with a minimal techno track and night cruise atmosphere. Speaking of which, it is the focal point on 'Extend' where a real beat has actually been stripped from it; that role is being played by sequencers . While having quite a lot going on in the low frequency range, it is getting most audible with the wobbly, massively gravitating bass in 'Expand'. With the expansive 'Exhale', you're being released. It has an equally long running time that again cries for: Patience is a virtue.

I'm sitting on the fence a little on this one. On one hand I admire how this has been crafted and the production being flawless; on the other, I can't shake off the notion that it is targeted for a specific audience who will most likely adore this stuff, but if you're not the aficionado of the music before, you won't be afterwards. Just check and hear for yourself.
