POEMS FOR LAILA has enormous history. The band was founded back in 1989 and since then about twenty musicians came and went as the band-members. The band toured over three continents and was one of the first Western artists who played in the USSR. This last fact is especially interesting since the band claims to have an inspiration from Russian Chanson (a unique musical phenomena, but totally unnecessary to be familiar with, if you're not Russian). Today POEMS FOR LAILA is a duo of Joanna Gemma Auguri and Nikolai Tomás. Together they managed to bring dark folk into the light.
The previous album of POEMS FOR LAILA was released in 2007. During the pause the mastermind of the band Nikolai Tomás has been releasing solo albums. He turned away from Russian prison-like songs to American country-music and went for Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. The female voice of the duo Joanna Gemma Auguri also had a solo project before. She got her popularity at the international musical festivals, where she represented Germany. As the both musicians combined their passion for dark folk, gospel and American country they created a fascinating album ‘Tiktak’.
‘Tiktak’ is meant for those who love dirty rough country like late Johnny Cash. Add to this magnificent female vocal and spice with honest and easy lyrics in English. If you have to wrinkle every time you hear an f-word and swearing, you better not to turn this album on. ‘Tiktak’ is totally about sex and rock-n-roll. There are eleven love elegies from a "terrible guy" who exposes his feelings and thoughts without shame and euphemisms. The arrangements are normally limited to guitar and some percussion, which underlines the intimate atmosphere of the whole album.
