Album Review

SCAMS are a young band with various influences from dance, pop, soul to post-hardcore. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of rhythmic and danceable songs here. First song ‘Youngblood’ sounds as weakest and shouldn’t have opened for the album. Fortunately it’s not very long and ‘Helicopter Parents’ more than makes up for it, it builds strongly on a hook, the constant repetition of ‘I don’t think so’ is guaranteed to stay in the listener’s mind as well as the impressive bass here. ‘Making Maps From Memory’ has a something of a laid back punk with its relaxed interludes and its slightly faster tempo parts and the somewhat angsty filled vocal making you feel that behind that laid back gloss, there’s something more claustrophobic. Some of the song also screams to be sung along with them. ‘It’s Not Perfection’ is my favourite here, the riff is melancholy, the bass picks through brilliantly, the vocals perfectly measured in. As with all the other songs it’s danceable and on the pulse with the rhythmic feel. ‘Rewrite Fiction’ is a satisfying album with enough uniqueness, interesting compositions with unobtrusive catchiness and quite enjoyable.
