sundfor19Gretchen Club, Berlin, Germany
2nd November 2015
Susanne Sundfør & Apothek

The Gretchen Club in Berlin Kreuzberg is already well-filled half an hour before the start of the concert. Primarily twentysomethings to late thirties, who have come to see the avant-garde-pop-show of SUSANNE SUNDFØR from Norway. For the second time this year the 29-year old Singer/ Songwriter played in Berlin. The location, a rather narrow oblong room with columns and ornate ceilings is so well stocked with about 400 guests that it was cozy. The stage is small, there was no stage pit, so that the concert had a very intimate atmosphere for both the people in the front row as well as the musicians.

Apothek

Shortly after 21 o’clock the Support APOTHEK, a likewise originating from Norway duo, which acts on stage as a quartet, started their set. Electro drums, keyboards and several notebooks where the main instruments of the band. 12 hours after the show, I realize that in addition to the drum sound during the first song and the continuous but rather soft quite good voice of the singer Morten Myklebust only a little has stuck by the music. The band played a rather worn set of which I would have liked a little more character. In terms of stage presence, the 3 men from the far north have reserves. More light would do them quite well. After about 40 minutes they were dismissed amid applause from the stage. https://www.facebook.com/apothekmusic

Susanne Sundfør

Both in the renovation break and before the appearance of the support, the guests were sounded by dramatic classical music, which somehow fit well for the main act - is the music of SUSANNE SUNDFØR but full of dramatic moments, expressions and arrangements. When Susanne + live band entered the stage around 22:15, she was cheered and applauded. The stage was shared by 1 drummer, 2 ladies (Megan Kovacs and Gunhild Kristoffersen) at various keyboards and precisely those voiced Susanne, who – dressed in white - seemed to be caught up at least the first song a little reality. The hypnotic loops, her ecstatic, rhythmic movements and twitching strobe-flashes could also have well-run under the slogan "Sex, Drugs & electro beats".

The setlist (see below) was very varied and showed the different facets of the charismatic singer in an excellent way. Both in the quieter and the louder parts have been impressed - this voice takes arm you and never lets you go. It flatters you, it shakes you awake and sucks up - like a siren and a moment later challenging... I'll admit that the emotion of the vocals of SUSANNE SUNDFØR is without doubt difficult to surpass. The audience seemed to feel the same and listened intently, danced and cheered the performance. Susanne and band were visibly pleased about it and played next to hit Delirious yet another song in the encore. After 13 songs the show was over and the band left the stage. Conclusion? SUSANNE SUNDFØR - anytime again.
