introTurbinenhalle, Oberhausen, Germany
6th June 2011
Rob Zombie, Duff McKagan’s Loaded

Now in 2011 the time has come for ROB ZOMBIE to return to the limelight and one could surely expect a cinematic performance of that seasoned artist extraordinaire who was coming to play at Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen within the scopes of the second European leg of “Hellbilly Deluxe 2” world tour. Two support acts were announced, WAYNE STATIC sadly had cancelled his whole tour. Now, we’d see if ZOMBIE's show really would serve what it was promising and a couple more people were just as curious as we were…

Duff McKagan’s Loaded

DUFF MCKAGAN became well known by his job as bassist for GUNS’N’ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER. His newly formed band LOADED would have their debut album ‘Dark Days’ out by that time. The band would subsequently be put on hiatus over various other projects until 2008 when they’d be returning with a new EP, entitled ‘Wasted Heart’, followed by the second studio album ‘Sick’ after the release of which they embarked on various tours. 2011 sees them returning with their third instalment ‘The Take’. http://duff-loaded.com/

Music & Performance
Duff and his band entered the stage to a rocking anthem of a song called ‘Dead Skin’ and directly started roaming the stage to give the audience a good warm-up. Later on in the further course of the show which was a little longer than planned because WAYNE STATIC had cancelled, it seemed to me that the band, even though they did a pretty good job on their instruments, acted like it was a routine job. It had everything it just lacked the passion for me, and so I have to say it became pretty boring as time passed on despite good response from the audience.

Rob Zombie

After relocating to New York City in 1985, ROB ZOMBIE became the front man of the popular band WHITE ZOMBIE with whom he has released 9 albums. Since 1996 he’s exclusively working solo and already his first album ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’, released in 1998 was certified 3-times platinum in the US. Besides his musical work, he’s been directing several movies since 2003, amongst them 2 remakes of the Halloween series. Nearly 12 years later he continued on a path almost forgotten with releasing ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2’ to critical acclaim in early 2010. http://www.robzombie.com / http://www.facebook.com/RobZombie

Music & Performance
For the ROB ZOMBIE Horror Live show everything on stage underwent a little rework with backdrops showing horror icon’s faces, a skeleton microphone stand and stuff. The skeleton soon became the centre of interest when ROB ZOMBIE climbed the pedestal it was build up on looking like a mixture of nightmare creature and Cyborg on the first tune ‘Sawdust in the Blood’. The cheers already on that first song wear deafening, but there was also something else making you wish you’d be deaf for a while. The sound, either at the front or in the back didn’t matter, was horrible. You heard almost no melody in the mix. It all was drowned by booming drums and too low guitars. It marred the experience a little. On the other hand, there was this great deal of passion, the band and especially Rob put into making this a celebration for everyone that almost evened the score.

Hard to find a few minutes where the guy was actually standing still while delivering with his band one hymn after the other. The audience was already his from the moment ‘Jesus Frankenstein’ was up with them getting to shout the chorus loud in unison or the childish fun they had doing the screaming game he did later on. Those never seem to get old or worn-out no matter how many times they’re used. Really cracking up they were when getting to hear one WHITE ZOMBIE track like ‘More Human Than Human’ or ‘Super Charger Heaven’. After such a barrage of hits there was no thinking of letting the band of the hook so easily, resulting in all in all 3 encores after which a content audience was released into the night! Despite the bad sound a show that deserves credit.
