shepastaway2015 introInterview with

Volkan Caner and Doruk Ozturkcan of She Past Away

It’s not very common to find bands in the Gothic scene coming from Turkey and even more uncommon to hear that the lyrics are in their native tongue. Now, SHE PAST AWAY came to Germany to play at the Blackfield Festival. Along with the festival, we had a short interview with the band about their release plans, why they are singing in Turkish and the origin of their band name or about their inspirations.

Reflections of Darkness [RoD]: On your Facebook page there’s written that you are working on the second album. So how does it go? What should fans expect from a new creation?
She Past Away: The work is going full force. Hopefully we will finish it in May. We think that it will be a really good second album. Songs for it are made in different styles. But the shepastaway2015 1prevailing mood is melancholy and full of darkness. In addition, the album will be released on the label again in the vinyl and CD.

RoD: Do you like musical experiments, combining elements of different genres, adding female vocals, etc.? Or you will stay on the wave of post-punk?
She Past Away: Our music already demonstrates some influences. In this question we are not limiting ourselves. More precisely, our music reflects all our musical desires. You will see these changes on our new album.

RoD: What do you think about your debut album now? If you had a chance, would you change something on it?
She Past Away: Of course, when you look back, such thoughts arise. I am sure this is true for all musicians. But I think we did everything we could well. I prefer to look forward instead of looking back.

RoD: Your lyrics are in Turkish. Of course, it sounds interesting and somewhat original, but have you ever thought about writing in English or in German, for instance?
She Past Away: I never thought about singing in English or German. Maybe we will make one or two songs in the future, but nothing more.

RoD: What mood do you need to write songs? What inspires you?
She Past Away: I would like to answer differently, but the most part of our life is in a shepastaway2015 2problematic mode. Of course it does not mean that we are the people staying melancholic all day long. But we are in a realistic, pessimistic state of mind, and it’s definitely showed in our music.

RoD: What is/are your favourite songs from your debut ‘Belirdi Gece’? And why?
She Past Away: In fact, I do not have favourites, but our song ‘Ruh’ was the first one that I wrote for the album. I can say that it had initiated the first album.

RoD: I guess you are often asked this question, but still wonder. Why did you choose such name for the band and what did you want to say with it?
She Past Away: The fact that we have chosen this name has no special meaning. We immediately thought of she passed away. And this is directly in common with the sad state. And we decided to use that name, as it is equally cold and spoiled and meaningless.

RoD: Do you have a musical education?
She Past Away: Yes, we have received a musical education. But the purpose of this was more just to finish that education. I do not think that this fact added something to the music we make.

RoD: Do you follow the modern dark scene? Maybe you have recently discovered a good band or a new release?
She Past Away: I try to follow when I have time. Soon there will be album releases of shepastaway2015 3LEBANON HANOVER and SELOFAN. Both bands were quite successful, we follow their news. In addition, AUTOMELODI is wonderful.

RoD: What music do you prefer to listen to?
She Past Away: Coldwave, Post Punk, Italo Disco, New Wave... Mostly music of the 80s. I prefer the dark and minimal style.

RoD: Are there any bands/ musicians who influenced your most of all?
She Past Away: Difficult to select someone.

RoD: I need to confess that you music has remind me a little bit of SHE WANTS REVENGE. What do you think about this band?
She Past Away: SHE WANTS REVENGE is not a band which I listen to. I find their first album successful. In my opinion, they were able to unite fans of indie, Darkwave and hipsters. But it's not particularly my music.

RoD: What do you like more, to play live or to work in the studio?
She Past Away: Definitely, live performances bring more fun.

RoD: This summer you were playing at Blackfield Festival in Germany. What did you expect from this show? Were you preparing something special for the event, like new songs?
She Past Away: Yes, I was hoping, it will be a wonderful show. Since time we will release a new album we were playing new songs.

RoD: What are your other plans for this year?
She Past Away: As I have said, at first - to release an album. And, in addition, to play as much as possible.
