Album Review

WORDS OF FAREWELL is a German progressive death metal band founded in 2007 by Erik Gaßmus and Phillipp Olivier. ‘Immersion’ is their debut album, although they released an EP ‘Ashes of the Coming Dawn’ and a promotional CD ‘From Now On...’ before. The opening track ‘Project: Daybreak’ is absolutely amazing. This clever composition ranging from epic moments to fiery death metal riffs has left me absolutely gobsmacked. This is one of the longest tracks on this album (5:50) but frankly, I listened to it four times before even moving on. It is extremely energetic but not chaotic, catchy but not simplistic. While at first I had the impression the vocal was a little bit too laboured, it disappeared further into the song and all elements seemed to be just floating in an absolute metal nirvana.

This state of ecstasy did not disappear with the following track, quite the opposite; it was steadily building up throughout the whole album. I have seen WORDS OF FAREWELL being described as a progressive death metal band but I would like to respectfully disagree on this one. In my humble opinion, everything points into the direction of melodic death metal with bands such as IN FLAMES, AT THE GATES and DARK TRANQUILITY as likely sources of inspiration. I would definitely like to hear more of WORDS OF FAREWELL in the future. They have had quite a turbulent history with lots of line-up changes what seems to have worked out quite well though. If they keep the flame burning I’m sure they have a great future ahead.
