Album Review

WINTER’S VERGE, the band that hails from Cyprus, is back with its third CD. There have been some changes in the band during the last years, not only in respect of changes of its members but much more importantly in its thematic orientation; the band abandoned the dragons ’n’ heroes inspiration and thankfully they decided to deal with more modern aspects of the world. In this album they stay closely to their idols, such as STRATOVARIUS and SONATA ARCTICA, and they added a small hint of CANDLEMASS (in the ‘Cunning Lullabies’). The band seems to have developed a skilful musicianship as the Power elements blend superbly with the Progressive ones without the latter showing any signs of pompous artistry which is the common flaw of many bands in the genre.

Their sound is dense and well-wrought in the German studios, and this release has some great moments in it like ‘Unto The Darkness’, ‘Dying’, and ‘Angels Of Babylon’, which justify the purchase of the CD. Having said that though it is evident that the band has not completely developed its own style, its characteristic and distinctive voice so to speak, and there are songs that come and go by as if you’re dealing with a tribute band, showing that there are moments where the band retreats to its idols for a sense of safety. Maybe that’s their weakest point and it does injustice not only to Charalambous’s superb Metal voice but also to the other members of the band as well.
