Album Review

Less is more - this seems to be the motto of WITHERSCAPE who recently released their new studio effort ‘The New Tomorrow’. The EP consists of five tracks and immediately starts off with powerful rock sounds, clean vocals as well as shouting techniques typical for the metal genre. However, some songs seem to be patched together since they lack consistency in themselves, which makes it difficult to understand the musical intention, especially in the opening track ‘The New Tomorrow', but also in ‘Out In The Cold’. The latter opens with dreamy acoustic guitar tunes, when suddenly the e-guitar takes over and turns the song into a hard rock track. This appears somehow inconsistent and irritating. Though the guitar riffs are fairly good, the overall impression of arbitrariness, in most songs, cannot be ignored.

But WITHERSCAPE are also able to strike softer, more melancholic and thoughtful notes, as in ‘A World Without Heroes’ and ‘Dead For Another Day’. Especially the latter can be rated as the best song of the EP regarding song structure, dynamics and instrumentation. The vocals fit perfectly with the guitar sounds. Finally it can be said that ‘The New Tomorrow’ is not only an album for those who like listening to metal, but also for lovers of hard rock with softer acoustic songwriter elements. However, the strongest point of criticism is that the merely five tracks on the EP are composed musically undemanding and with little diversity, with the effect that one can quickly lose the attention and the music takes a back seat. Still there are interesting musical ideas to be developed, and we can be curious about the following endeavours of WITHERSCAPE.
