Track Review

01. Savage Path - 4:14
The first track of this EP has – in my opinion – the function of an intro to get into the right mood for the forthcoming. 'Savage Path' is dominated by its complex drum programming (which is giving the song an almost ritual feeling) and the use of a variety of sampled sounds and orchestral glimpses. The lyrics consist of only a few sentences and are recited in yelworC typical style: sometimes cleaner and sometimes a little bit distorted.

02. Eclosion - 3:55
Although it is a slower track, the title track of this mini album delivers an unbeliever power in this short amount of time. As far as I know, the first time ever female vocals are used in a yelworC track and it sounds good to me. The variable and very complex drum programming as well as the use of samples and atmosperical soundscapes blends perfectly together to create an absolute masterpiece.

03. Vampire's Tongue - 6:20
For the first time on this EP an acoustic guitar is used in a track which gives an organic feeling to the complexity of this song. Samples and indefinable noises alternate and blend together with demanding and mighty orchestral passages and the complexity and variability of the drum programming are making this track a real experience.

04. Hellfrost's Grip - 4:43
As the title says it’s getting cold. Ice-cold! Cold as hell! The other songs were already dark but this track surpasses them all. The vocals sound as if they are coming from the deepest frozen sea in hell. Needless to mention the awesome drum programming again! The deep chorals used in this track are increasing the frosty atmosphere of this track a lot.

05. Dark Thorn (Version 1) - 4:30
This is the first of the preview tracks to the forthcoming album ‘Icolation’ and also the first one with a straighter and danceable structure which lasts nearly the whole song. While it is accompanied by various samples, atmospheres and the typical dark vocal style, in the middle of the song the drum sounds are replaced by probably real drums, what – in my opinion – sounds excellent but a little bit quiet…

06. Ecce Mundo (Extended Cut) -5:17
The second preview track goes quite into he same direction as ‘Dark Thorn’ which is definitely not bad because it never gets boring. A playful drum programming and melodies and also the great sounding guitar synth (or maybe a real guitar?) complete the package.

07. Die dritte Kraft - 4:16
This is – as far as I know- the first yelworC track with German vocals and they fit to this song very well. The song title means “the third Power” in English. This song is also a little bit straighter than some of the other songs on the EP but nevertheless a great piece of music. Playful electronics and beautifully arranged orchestral melodies collide and are creating an overall dark and dense atmosphere.

08. The Shrine of Illusion (Version 1) - 5:54
The last preview track is a highly complex piece of music, an overwhelming amount of samples. Sudden breaks with rhythmical and melodic changes. Orchestral passages and melodic fragments as well as indefinable sounds emerge just to disappear a few seconds later. The tempo changes more than one time and over all of this enthrones the voice of Peter Devin like a storyteller from hell.

09. Spiral of Transformation (Bonus Track) - 4:24
This is – in yelworC terms - the catchiest song and it closes this EP very well. It is marked as a bonus track. I think this is because it is not a part of the Dante cycle. This song is of a slower kind and a highly melodic piece of music. I need to mention the great drum programming again which is always a remarkable part in the yelworC tracks.

Conclusion

YelworC is back and stronger than ever with an impressive release in the shape of this EP. The songs have more melodic elements and are straighter and a little bit catchier. But still there is this stunning complexity in almost every song. With every new spin you will find something new. It is a really pretentious piece of music that demands the full concentration of the listener. But if you give it the time to grow that it needs then you'll listen to it over and over again. A must-have for everyone who likes complex dark electro!
