Album Review

WOLVES LIKE US is actually not as young the pups as many might think. Lots of the members here all come from numerous different rock or hardcore bands, but together here they blend everything for some rough, yet enjoyable post rock. ‘Late Love’ is a mix of classic Rock’n’Roll hymns with gritty production such as ‘We Speak In Tongues’ with the aggression of hardcore and the slightly soft melodic flavours of Indie music. In fact, from the first several listens, one might consider them very similar to late MASTADON with the vocal comparisons, with a tough of THE OCEAN - minus the hardcore roars. WOLVES LIKE US seem to step back a bit on the hardcore bits, despite the harsh vocal qualities, and tend to dwell more on a bit of a stoner rock formula, such as when it comes to tracks like ‘Old Dirty Paranoia’ and ‘Gone To Dust’.

The band even throws in some punk rock influences when it comes to ‘My Enemy’, where the melody is very energetic and has a lot more flavour, despite the repetitive notes. When compared to a track like ‘Shiver In The Heat’, it seems a lot more lively whereas the latter is a bit generic in how it tends to stay in one form of riffing and the drums seem to just pound along on one pedal with variations few and far in between. Sure, it is important to keep rhythm but fans might find this a bit boring. Some may even ask where the “post rock” influence is because usually fans expect post rock to be highly progressive and epic. Fortunately, WOLVES LIKE US have that too with the final track ‘To Whore With Foreign Gods’. Rather than just chug along with an upbeat pace like all the other tracks, it is very slow, foreboding, and the groove involved is certainly doom metal based due to the gritty production. Even the drums play a more experimental and prominent role in the middle where they actually sound percussive and lively with the guitars and distortion quieted down. Fans will probably find this track the most enjoyable, not only due to its epic length, but also the various moments of heavy and soft.

For a debut album, this is pretty solid stuff. It merges a bit of the old school sound with the more modern stuff of groups like THE GATES OF SLUMBER for a mix of post rock and Slugecore with a bit more lively tone than one of depression and grudging. However, WOLVES LIKE US include a few moments of that as well to appease fans who just might be seeking that kind of atmosphere. ‘Late Love’ isn’t the most romantic piece, but it is certainly intriguing. No doubt these guys will put some more great stuff out in the future as they progress along.
